ABOUT USOur History & Purpose

Our History

The Bronx Neighborhood Housing Services (Bronx NHS) was incorporated in 1982 as NHS of the North Bronx.  At that time, NHS’s focus was to help homeowners improve their homes and neighborhoods through rehabilitation lending. Later, to meet increased demand, we began providing services to help residents achieve first-time home ownership, culminating in the launch of the Bronx’s first Homeownership Center in 2010, offering a full range of pre and post purchase services.  In 2016, we changed our name to The Bronx NHS CDC, Inc. as part of our restructuring efforts o better serve the community.  We are transitioning from a 32 years partnership with Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHSNYC) to an independent community-based organization.  As part of this transition, we are in the process of launching in collaboration with our local Community Board 12, a community needs assessment with the participation of hundreds of residents.  The needs assessment will result in the development of a three year strategic plan.

Since 1982, NHS’s efforts have assisted over 40,000 residents, and stimulated over $300 million in public and private investment.  Our in-house rehabilitation specialists have facilitated 5,000 home inspections, conducted over 1,200 home repair units, counseled over 2,500 families in home ownership and have placed over 1,500 low and moderate income families into homes.  On average, NHS reaches over 2,500 potential and existing homeowners through our innovative programs per year.
