About the Role

The Housing Specialist will play a critical role in the implementation of the HUD Healthy Home Production Grant Program. This position involves conducting home assessments, coordinating repairs, and providing education to residents on healthy housing practices. The ideal candidate will have experience in housing inspections, case management, and working with low-income communities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Home Assessments and Inspections:
- Conduct home visits to assess housing conditions and identify health hazards (e.g., mold, lead, pests, poor ventilation).
- Document findings and recommend corrective actions to address identified hazards.
- Ensure compliance with HUD guidelines and local housing codes.

2. Case Management:
- Work directly with program participants to develop individualized action plans for home repairs and improvements.
- Provide guidance and support to residents throughout the repair process.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files for all participants.

3. Coordination of Repairs:
- Collaborate with contractors, inspectors, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and quality completion of repairs.
- Monitor repair progress and conduct follow-up inspections to verify compliance with program standards.
- Address any issues or concerns raised by residents or contractors.

4. Community Education and Outreach:
- Educate residents on healthy housing practices and the importance of addressing health hazards.
- Develop and distribute educational materials on topics such as lead safety, mold prevention, and pest control.
- Participate in community outreach events to promote the program and recruit eligible participants.

5. Data Management and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of home assessments, repairs, and participant outcomes.
- Prepare regular reports on program activities and outcomes for the Program Manager and HUD.
- Use data to identify trends and recommend program improvements.

6. Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure all program activities comply with HUD regulations and grant requirements.
- Assist with grant reporting and documentation as needed.

This is a contract position funded by the HUD Healthy Homes Production Grant, with an expected duration of 3.5 years. This is a part time position, starting salary is $20K per year.

Requirements

Education:

High School Diploma, Associates or Bachelors in any construction related fields desirable. Relevant experience may be substituted for education.


Experience:

- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in housing inspections, case management, or a related field.

- Experience working with low-income communities and diverse populations.

- Knowledge of housing codes, health hazards, and home repair processes.


Skills:

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with residents, contractors, and team members.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and data management systems.

- Ability to conduct home inspections and identify health hazards.

- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.


Other Requirements:

- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is highly desirable.

- Must be willing to work in The Bronx and travel locally as needed.

- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle preferred.
